SUDBURY. PARLIAMENTARY ACTS
An Act To Indemnify Witnesses Who May Give Evidence Before The Lords Spiritual And Temporal On A Bill To Exclude The Borough Of Sudbury From Sending Burgesses To Serve In Parliament. 16th July 1842 .
London: Printed by George E. Eyre and Andrew Spottiswoode, printers to the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, 1842 . 0. Folio. 2pp. Woodcut armorial headpiece; disbound. *** The Sudbury Election - August 2nd 1837 - The Sudbury election of 1835, which Charles Dickens reported for the Morning Chronicle, is thought by many experts to be the inspiration for the famous Eatanswill election in his novel Pickwick Papers. The election for this notorious borough took place on Tuesday. The result has been most distressing to the worthy and independent electors of both parties.. The expenditure at the election in 1835, when bribery was unrestrained by either party, amounted upon an average to at least £35 a man for men of all description upon the register. Profiting by this example the demands of the parties became more exorbitant and the very excess of the iniquity has in this case happily produced its own remedy. Hence the Reform bill and subsequent acts to stamp out future corruption.
